Details: |
The server named Frontier failed on March 15th when returning it to service after the planned power outage in the ITC building. Frontier was over 10 years old and ran the Solaris operating system on Sun hardware. We have released a new machine (still named Frontier) to replace much of the functionality previously provided by the implementation of Frontier on the old Solaris hardware. The new machine is a virtual machine running RedHat 6 Linux. All Frontier accounts have been migrated to the new server, however user passwords need to be reset. Users who wish to use Frontier and have not been contacted by IT consultants should contact the IT help desk to request a password change. Please note that the password complexity requirements for Frontier have changed. The new requirements are a minimum of 8 characters and passwords must contain at least one each of a lower case letter, an uppercase letter, a number, and a symbol. The new Frontier server currently provides the following functionality: SSH/SFTP o NOTE: The SSH key fingerprints for Frontier have changed. Users will need to update their SSH clients to reflect these changes. New key fingerprints are available at http://w3.uwyo.edu or http://www.uwyo.edu/askit/displaydoc.asp?id=265. SAS 9.4 (This is a change from SAS 9.2 that was previously available on Frontier.) User web pages and files have been transferred. Anonymous FTP has not been restored. Users are requested to contact the IT helpdesk to discuss alternative options. For people who are doing code development on Frontier: o GNU C, C++, and Fortran have been installed on Frontier. Perl and Python are also available. o Any C, C++, and Fortran code that users have written and are running on Frontier will need to be recompiled for the new environment. If the users find missing libraries that were on the old Frontier, please let us know so we can investigate filling the need. o The old Frontier was running on Sparc processors and the new machine is running on Intel processors. Any code optimizations done specifically for Sparc processors may need to be reworked. o The Sun C and Fortran compilers are not installed on the new machine. Any C or Fortran code with specific optimizations for the Sun compilers may need to be reworked. |
