Who is affected?

The multimedia server (multimedia.uwyo.edu) had a security patch applied this weekend that appears to have broken playback of .mp3 files from this site when using Windows Media Player.  Any URL that uses the ‘asxgen’ path (ex: http://multimedia.uwyo.edu/asxgen/test/test.mp3) is not currently working with .mp3 files.

 

A workaround solution is to replace ‘asxgen’ with ‘ramgen’ in the URL.  This will force the .mp3 file to be played through a media player (RealPlayer, QuickTime, etc – if installed) other than Windows Media Player.

 

Other file types, such as .wmv, are not affected by this issue and do not need to have their URLs modified.

Problem resolution:

A new URL is now being provided for streaming .mp3 files to Windows Media Player.  The URL syntax is:

http://wmedia.uwyo.edu/<sitename>/<medianame>

Example:
Old URL:  http://multimedia.uwyo.edu/asxgen/test/test.mp3
New URL: http://wmedia.uwyo.edu/test/test.mp3
