Scheduled Updates: Windows OS Service Packs Out-of-Date on Some UW Computers

posted 8/5/2010 4:56:30 PM

Information Technology will be pushing Windows service packs to any UWYO domain computer that is not running XP Service Pack 3 or Vista Service Pack 2.  This will begin on the morning of August 10th, 2010 at 3am.  If multiple patches are required they will be installed on consecutive mornings and each will require a reboot.  Notifications will be sent to the person listed as the responsible party for each computer prior to the patching. See the following for details:

A number of UW computers have outdated Windows operating systems because they do not have the most recent service packs installed. If you are among those with outdated computer operating systems you will received notice via email from Information Technology during the month of August.

Service Packs provide updates to operating systems to ensure security, reliability, and fixes. Microsoft no longer provides updates for the following Windows XP and Vista versions:

  • Windows XP Service  Pack 1
  • Windows XP Service  Pack 1a
  • Windows XP Service  Pack 2
  • Windows Vista (without any Service  Packs)

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is still supported, but should be upgraded to the latest Service Pack.

To help protect your computer and the university network, it is very important to upgrade or update your operating system.

There are three options that are available to help you achieve this goal:

  1. Upgrade your operating system to Windows 7 Enterprise. This is the recommended option for all computers that meet the system requirements for this latest operating system.
  2. Go to Microsoft’s Service  Pack site to get instructions and information on how to get the latest Service  Pack for your operating system (for Windows XP and Windows Vista)
    • You can go directly to the Microsoft Update page and begin the process of checking for needed updates and immediately start installing the required updates. The utilities that are located there will continue to check your system until all updates have been applied.
  3. Wait for Information Technology’s automatic update for Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems to install. The first group of computers will automatically be updated in the early morning of August 10th, around 3 a.m. (see a complete automatic upgrade schedule by location, below.)  Please leave your computer turned on so that the installation can take place overnight. The installations will occur automatically; however, it will require a reboot of the system. DO NOT POWER OFF YOUR COMPUTER DURING THIS PROCESS. If your computer is seriously out of date, it may require a reboot on consecutive days until it is caught up on all Service Packs and patches.

If you wish to upgrade to Windows 7 Enterprise, please contact your IT user consultant for a consultation to determine if your computer can be upgraded to Windows 7. If you do not know who your user consultant is, you can find out by browsing the User Consultant Department Assignment page.

If you have questions in regards to installing the Service Packs using Microsoft Update, please call the IT Help Desk at 766-4357, Option 1, or email userhelp@uwyo.edu.

If the automatic updates fail or if you have any problems or questions associated with the Service Packs, immediately contact the IT Help Desk at 766-4357, Option 1, during normal business hours and IT will dispatch a consultant to assist.
