Who is affected?

UW email users.

More details:

At approximately noon today, Thursday, April 14th, IT was aware of problems with the UW email system causing slow message delivery.

Problem resolution:

Messages will eventually arrive at their destinations. Delivery times are slow due to a backlog in the email system, but should improve throughout the evening. No email messages will be lost.

Updated 9:30 PM, 4/14/2011:

Exchange is functioning normally for email between Exchange Accounts. The Central Mail Gateways still have a backlog of messages but continue to make headway on catching up on the backlog.

As a result of the problem, users may notice that they received duplicates of some messages. This is particularly true of messages from Unified Messaging. This includes missed call notifications and voice mail messages. Users may also have received duplicates of other types of emails.

Updated 4:45 PM, 4/14/2011:

UW email is being delivered, but very slowly due to an overloaded system. Email is expected to return to normal speeds by later this evening.

The UW Email system was slowed before noon today as the result of a user posting a message with a very large attachment to a large number of recipients. Information Technology is taking steps to limit attachment sizes for messages sent to email lists with a large number of members. No email messages will be lost due to this incident.
