Who is affected?

Users who manually install Microsoft updates.

More details:

Microsoft Update KB2508823 was released on Tuesday, March 8th. It has not been approved for distribution to UW network computers using the UW WSUS update distribution system. Therefore, users connected to the WSUS server will not automatically receive the update. However, users not using the WSUS system who install updates directly from Microsoft will likely automatically install the patch.

IT recommends not installing Microsoft KB2508823 Update on UW computers at this time.

Problem resolution:

IT personnel are investigating the problem. No estimated time for correction of the problem is currently available.

Updated 3/11/2011:

Microsoft has confirmed a problem with the KB2508823 update. Microsoft is still delivering the update to Windows Update users but it is no longer automatically installed by default. The user must select the update for installation.

Microsoft states the problem only occurs when updates are applied at shutdown. That is, if the user manually shuts down their computer when updates are available, the available updates will be installed. However, it appears that Microsoft now prevents the KB2508823 update from being installed during shutdown.

Microsoft says they will issue a patch to correct the problem.
